Dr. Sherlock Rawana, an outstanding educator – by Syd Latchana

CHS alumnus, the distinguished, Dr Sherlock Rawana, Vice Chancellor and Professor at the Ravi Gandhi  University has recently been recognized by the Government for his dedication and contribution  in the establishment of a new campus for the Ravi Gandhi University in Guyana.  Sherlock attended Corentyne High School (re-named JC Chandisingh Secondary School) in the 1960’s, hails from the former sugar estate of Pln. Port Mourant and belongs to  the famous Rawana clan of academics and professionals He  is also a brother in law of our own well known great educator, Julius Nathoo. After graduating from CHS, Sherlock pursued further studies in both the USA and Canada and holds post graduate degrees including a PHD.  Sherlock a former resident in Canada, re migrated to Guyana a few years ago to serve the educational sector which is always close to his heart.

Under the leadership of Dr Sherlock Rawana, Vice Chancellor, the Ravi Gandhi University of Science and Technology has recently opened its new campus in Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown.  Previously, the University was housed in two buildings in Georgetown but were too cramped to host large influx of students. This new campus offers students a modern environment with new classrooms fully equipped laboratories and modern other facilities such as medical clinics, computer labs and administrative offices.. This university has been accredited by the Ministry of Education through the National Accreditation Council as an independent Institution of Post Secondary and Tertiary Level.

The Minister of Education, Hon Nicolette Henry who attended the opening ceremony made mention of Guyana’s need for reputable educational institutions such as the Ravi Gandhi University to properly trained its youths and encouraged the university in its higher academic pursuance. The Minister in her opening remarks encouraged the University to maintain its high standards so that  its students are of the highest quality which could contribute to the Ravi Gandhi University becoming the envy of other institutions.

On behalf of the CHS-JCCSS Alumni Association, we wish Dr Sherlock Rawana, Vice Chancellor and Professor, much success in Ravi Gandhi University continued academic progress to meet required standards and acquire further accreditation to better serve the youths who want to pursue a career path in the sciences, medicine or technology.
