Mental Health Issues Among Offshore Medical Students in Guyana from January to March 2023: A Cross-Sectional Study

The team chose a topic under psychology as a research topic in order to raise awareness of mental health and its importance while promoting mental health care. It provides support and evidence for the effectiveness of services provided and programs that are designed to target those that are not limited to mental health disorders but instead the general public as a whole. This is being done so that our younger and future generation can move away from the stigma of mental health and to determine how individuals choose to handle stress and relate to others with similar situations and/ problems, this study is also being conducted to learn how an individual handles there emotional, psychological, and social well-being overall. While we all might have heard of the benefits of becoming a doctor and all of the praises that comes    with it. It is also Important that we also know the lesser-known facts that accompanies this career.

 

Anxiety may come in different forms, to students however, it presents itself in the form of a common headache, stomach aches, increased heartbeat or an individual may just have difficulty breathing, sweating and excessive shaking, some students may also undergo panic attacks based on the severity of their anxiety.

Depression has various factors that trigger a student, some of which includes problems that negatively affect an individual’s self-esteem or self-confidence which can also have varying subfactors like their weight, peer problems, academic problems, financial problems, and family problems. Depression can also show signs of frustration, irritability with a persistent mood change, and the inability and lack of motivation to continue with further schooling.

Anger can be an underlying cause of anxiety and depression. Anger that is not appropriately expressed can disrupt relationships, affect thinking and behavior patterns, and create a variety of physical problems.

Sleep disturbance based upon numerous studies shows that 70-76% of medical students have poor sleep quality which has a high impact on students’ physical health, mental and psychological health as well as academic performance all of which can be an underlying factory that later leads to depressive and anxiety disorders.

Substance abuse is prevalent among students due to excessive stress and the high demands of some medical schools tend to have, causing greater pressure to be placed upon students. As a consequence of the higher expectations required from medical students, they tend to turn to stimulants and cognitive-enhancing drugs in order to get an advantage in test performance. Some students may tend to use tranquilizing drugs as a form of relaxation so that they can unwind from a high-pressure day of packed classes, while others may turn to smoke and alcohol as the simplest form and most reliable in terms of acquiring.
